World Book Night

World Book Night LogoWorld Book Night will give away 1 million free books on April 23, and Otowi Station Bookstore is looking for “book givers” to help get books into the hands of people who are nonreaders or who are underserved because of income or location or other reasons.

A committee of booksellers and librarians chose the 30 titles to be given away. Special paperback editions of the 30 titles are being printed. Costs are being underwritten by publishers, printers and paper companies. All 30 authors have waived their royalties.

The book givers won’t be going to bookstores or libraries, but to such places as schools, coffee shops, movie theaters, wherever people hang out.

To be a book giver, visit the website of World Book Night, http://www.us.worldbooknight.org, and register by February 1.
For more information about becoming a book giver, contact Ellen Ben-Naim at 662-9589.

Celebrate the centennial of statehood with a book about New Mexico

Celebrate the centennial of New Mexico Statehood on January 6 by reading a book about the Land of Enchantment or written by a New Mexican. Some of our favorite classics about New Mexico or written by New Mexicans are

All the Pretty Horses, Cormac McCarthy;

Blood and Thunder, Hampton Sides;

Death Comes for the Archbishop, Willa Cather;

The Delight Makers, Adolph Bandelier;

The Milagro Beanfield War, John Nichols; and

Red Sky at Morning, Richard Bradford.

New Mexico has produced scores of novelists, poets, and playwrights whose gifts have enriched the world. Notable New Mexican authors include Rudolfo Anaya, Witter Bynner, Peggy Pond Church, James D. Doss, Lois Duncan, Joy Harjo, Tony Hillerman, Mark Medoff, N. Scott Momaday, Jack Schaefer, Leslie Marmon Silko, Edith Warner, and Frank Waters.

And we love reading the works of our own local authors, including Nancy Bartlit, Patrick Burns, Lowell Christensen, Amethyst Collins, Theresa Cornwell, George Cowan, Tatianna Dickens, J. M. Dougherty, Kendall Fortson, Terry Foxx, Fraser Goff, Rivka Goldman, Richard Hannemann, Dorothy Hoard, Dick and Kathryn Huelster, Jorg Jansen, Amber and Azrael K, Mike Katko, Karen Kendall, Sherry King, T. Jackson King, Andi Kron, Craig Martin, Cas Mason, Jennifer McKerley, David McNeese, Micron Mike, David Mutschlecner, Cary Neeper, Octavio Ramos, Shirley Raye Redmond, Tom Ribe, Inez Ross, Bun Ryan, Tom Steward, and Darla Graff Thompson.

Come in today and read the Land of Enchantment!

Something for Everyone at Otowi Station!

Otowi Station Bookstore is your headquarters for gifts for everyone on your shopping list.

A book is a present you can open again and again. Just ask anyone on our astonishingly attractive staff about recommendations, old favorites, hot sellers, and underrated treasures for readers of all ages and interests. And check out the selections in our Winter Catalog!

We have lots of gifts under $1 that kids can buy themselves, including holiday erasers, cute finger puppets,candy necklaces, holiday stencils, and really sour popping candy that caused my head to shrink down and disappear into my neck.

For friends and family afar, we have a wide variety of Southwestern gifts, including coffee table books, red chile pistachios, and piñon coffee. We also have easy-to-ship T-shirts and keepsakes with Los Alamos and New Mexico motifs.

Spend a winter's night with the family. We have games for all ages and abilities. You'll find new games like Anti-Monopoly and Killer Bunnies and the Quest for the Magic Carrot and old favorites like Farkel and Bananagrams, which I learned to my dismay that Michele plays for blood.

Don't forget the gifts that everyone needs: calendars, planners, and engagement books. Whether you're an animal fancier, a mathematician, an art aficionado, a fan of cartoons and graphic arts, or someone with a warped sense of humor (I'm looking at you, ET), we have your calendar!

And for the person who has everything, pick up The Boltzmann Equation and Its Applications.

Still stuck about a gift? Try one of our one-size-fits-all, never expiring, available-in-any-denomination, genuine solid plastic gift cards, which the recipient can use here in the store or online.

See you soon!

Wigglers, Toddlers, and Rompers on Parade at Otowi Station

Otowi Station Bookstore is delighted to invite you and your favorite little person (infants to 5 years old) to story time here in the store every Wednesday at 10 a.m. beginning September 21.  Each story time lasts 20-30 minutes.

Story time is one of the best ways to use books: it promotes communication, taking turns, active participation, shared attention, and genuine love of reading!

Parents and caregivers, please help us maintain the positive story time atmosphere by participating and being attentive.

Please attend with your preschoolers, because we know that these little folks may need special help to be successful. You are their best role models.

And remember to reinforce the story-time experience by sharing books at home with your child!

We look forward to seeing you!
